Uniforms with Style

For the 2021 season, the Chicago White Sox unveiled a brand new alternate uniform that has taken the league by storm. The uniform is part of the Nike x MLB City Connect Series that many teams will be participating in. The Soxs are the 3rd of 7 MLB teams to release uniforms so far during the campaign.

The uniform is a flip from their traditional home jersey that we’re used to seeing. Instead of the white base and grey pinstripes, the City Connect uniform has a dark grey base and white pinstripes. What really makes the uniform unique and pop is the gothic-style typeface that reads “Southside” across the front. The White Sox new City Connect uniform also features a textured pattern with inspiration from the Windy City’s “Greystone” architectural style. The team’s usual alternate logo of a single white sock on a black diamond is on the left sleeve and each sleeve is capped with a white and grey stripe. Down at the “jock tag,” embroidered in white, is the road “Chicago” script — this detail will not be seen on-field as it will be tucked into their equally dark grey pants. The pants carry on the same pinstripe and Greystone textured pattern from the jersey.

The White Sox new alternate uniform speaks directly to the culture around the team but also the city - “Their uniforms speak to the strength and hardworking nature of the Southside of Chicago without saying a word. We wanted to harness the Southside’s personality for the Nike MLB City Connect Series and introduce its attitude to newer, younger fans,” said Wil Green, Nike Sr. Creative Director, MLB.

The idea behind the City Connect Series was to recognize the relationship between each city and its Major League ball club. Green mentioned that Nike designed the uniforms in close collaboration with each team with the intent to honor  each community’s unique essence while also pushing “the boundaries of baseball uniform design by bringing in details, colours, mottos, and more that are important to the city.”

We can’t wait to see the rest of the City Connect Series that Nike comes out with! It’s cool to see the sport follow in the footsteps of the NBA with their city jerseys. Maybe we’ll even start to see MLB players show off their fits in the tunnel before their games and really up the fashion statements in baseball!
